Collider Video has confirmed with sources that Marvel has hired Cate Shortland to direct the standalone Black Widow movie starring Scarlett Johansson. She beat out approximately 75 directors who met with Marvel, including Amma Asante and Maggie Betts. Written by Jac Schaffer, the superhero film is expected to be a prequel that will explore the character's origin story. There's no release date yet, but 2020 feels like a safe bet considering the timing of this announcement and Johansson's own schedule.
